Drivers won’t be able to fill up at a popular gas station in Butler Township for the next several months.
A project to demolish the Sheetz- at the corner of Route 68 and Meridian Road- has begun. The company is building a new, prototype store at the same location- which will be bigger and include a drive-thru. Sheetz hopes to sell alcohol when it reopens.
Local firefighters got the chance to hold a training exercise at the store on Tuesday night. Butler City and Township Joint Fire Chief Chris Switala said firefighters were also able to practice on a home, which was purchased by Sheetz and will also be demolished to make way for the new store.
Firefighters from the city of Butler, Butler Township and Unionville took part in the training exercises.
Chief Switala said commercial structures- like convenience stores- are not made available for firefighter use very often since some of the training involves causing damage necessary when fighting a fire.
The new Sheetz in Butler Township is expected to open sometime this fall.
