The Slippery Rock University football team was victorious over host Gannon Saturday afternoon by a final of 41-14.
The Rock’s defense, coming off a loss to Seton Hill where they allowed 41 points, stepped up and stopped a high powered Gannon offense that featured running back Brock Jones, a Harlon Hill candidate. All-American Defensive End Marcus Martin led the defensive effort with 11 tackles, 2.5 sacks, in addition to one forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Butler High grad Bob Vernick, a junior linebacker, also had a big night. He finished with nine tackles and two sacks.
As for the Rock’s Offense, star running back Shamar Greene returned after missing two games with an leg/ankle injury. He finished the game with 100 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Senior Quarterback Dante Nania went 13-28 on the day, passing for 124 yards.
Saturday’s win was their first road win against Gannon since the school joined the PSAC in 2008.
The Rock will be back in action on Saturday, when they host CalU for their Annual Homecoming game. The game can be heard on The Rock Station 97.7FM and on 977rocks.com.
Kickoff for Saturday’s game is set for 2pm.
