A new, 10-county group will focus on improving transportation within the region.
Butler County is included in the newly formed Regional Transportation Alliance of Southwestern Pennsylvania, designed to find transportation solutions tailored to community needs, as well as promoting discussion on the future of transportation.
The 22-member committee has both elected officials and private sector leaders. Kim Geyer represents Butler. She is the assistant to County Commissioner Bill McCarrier.
The group will first collect feedback on transportation issues and then sort through what they get. Co-Chairman Steve Craig (who is a Lawrence County Commissioner) said the need for this certain type of group is greater now as transportation evolves into the 21st century with different modes and services, such as Uber and driverless cars.
This alliance is different from the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission, as it includes private-sector individuals and is not constrained by the same rules for seeking funding for projects.
Included in the group are Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Lawrence, Washington and Westmoreland counties and Pittsburgh.
