Two groups of Slippery Rock University communication seniors are assisting Butler Township by using the skills they learned in class to help get some important messages across to residents.
Cory Milkovich was the presenter during a meeting on Tuesday for a five-student team tasked with increasing volunteerism within the township’s fire department. It’s a topic that Milkovich said recently touched him personally.
“This hits home for me,” Milkovich said. “Last September, my family lost our home to a house fire caused by a lightning strike. If it had not been for firefighters that day, we would have literally lost everything.”
The “Find Your Calling” campaign- along with the “You’re Paying for it—Use it”- campaign focusing on raising awareness of the new waste management provider, are planned to be implemented in May.
These projects are designed to bridge the gap between the classroom and workplace with actual client work.
Brandon Phillipi presented for the Waste Management awareness campaign team, which used tools including a focus group and online survey to gather data.
Phillipi said through their work, they found Butler Township residents were most unhappy with the color of the recycling bin and the lack of glass recycling when asked about the township’s new contract with Waste Management.
According to president of the Butler Township Board of Commissioners Dave Zarnick, the township plans to take advantage of the plans the students developed in order to correct problems and improve the township.
