The Pittsburgh Pirates could not solve Jake Arrieta Sunday night, losing 4-0 and missing their chance to sweep the Chicago Cubs. Arrieta had a perfect game into the seventh inning before a Gregory Polanco hit. Pirate starter A.J. Burnett passed the 2,500 strikeout mark in the game, becoming the 32nd Major League pitcher to do so. The Pirate loss snapped an eight-game winning streak. The Pirates are 4-1/2 games in front of the Cubs for the top Wild Card spot, with six games remaining in the season. A victory last night would have moved the Bucs to within two games of the first-place St. Louis Cardinals. The Cards lost to Milwaukee Sunday afternoon.
The Pirates open their final homestand of the season tonight against the Cardinals. J.A. Happ will start for the Pirates opposite Lance Lynn of the Cards. Game time is 7:05pm. Pre-game on WISR 680am is 6:40pm.
