Thousands have decided to make the trip east for even a glimpse of Pope Francis as he visits Philadelphia this weekend, including some Butler County residents.
Barbara Brandon and her husband Roy left Friday morning with fellow parishioners from St. Fidelis Church in Meridian, as well as several Catholics from Pittsburgh parishes.
The Brandons plan to attend mass with Bishop David Zubik of the Diocese of Pittsburgh on Saturday. Then on Sunday, the Pope is expected to address the World Meeting of Families and the Brandons will be among the large crowds to hear his words.
“Just to be in the presence of him is the most wonderful feeling,” Barbara said. “He is a people pope. They say he’s a very, very humble person.”
Barbara says her and her entire group are wearing custom-made black and gold shirts that resemble a Pittsburgh Pirates or Steelers shirt but sport a picture of Pope Francis on the front with the words ‘Francis #1!’ on the back.
