A proposal before the Pennsylvania Legislature would make English the state’s official language for government purposes, but some argue it could send a hostile message to residents who don’t speak it.
The House State Government Committee, which is chaired by local State Rep. Daryl Metcalfe, heard from supporters Monday who said the designation would save tax dollars. Critics of the proposal say the move is simply unconstitutional.
The American Civil Liberties Union in Pennsylvania opposed the measure. An ACLU official said Monday that about 2 million state residents have little or no English skills.
