Today is the deadline to bid on the four former Butler Area School District elementary schools.
Earlier this year, the district closed Broad Street, Clearfield, Meridian and Oakland elementary schools as part of a consolidation plan. The school board has now been looking for interested buyers of the buildings. Bids are scheduled to be opened at noon.
During a school board meeting earlier this week, a group of Clearfield Township residents expressed interest in purchasing the former Clearfield Elementary to be used as a community center. It’s not known if the group put together a bid.
A current school board member and incoming member, who have been opposed to the consolidation plan from the beginning, have filed a lawsuit against the district seeking to stop the sale of the schools. Their reasoning is after the November election and new board members are seated, it would be harder to reverse the consolidation if the schools are no longer owned by the district.
A county judge decided to take no action on the suit but did say he would consider stopping a sale if it looks like the board is planning to finalize a deal.
