A local organization is expanding into some new areas in order to mentor students in the area for free.
According to Michael Liebler, the founder and executive director of Connecting2Tomorrow, “We have classes that are meeting in the Butler area at the YMCA. We will also be using the YMCA in Cranberry Township and Slippery Rock area and with the Karns City School District. Then, we have some new areas we have ventured into, we have three groups in the Sandy Lake area and two in the Franklin area this year.”
The 2015-16 mentor class is made up of 19 people who meet twice a month for 18 weeks. About 45 students have signed up to be mentored.
The group participates with the Butler School District alternative education program, as well as recently taking over an in-school mentoring program formerly operated by Women United. However, as the group grows, so does the need for funding.
“As we grow and develop, we have had more access to grants, especially local community grants like Walmart, the Junior Women’s club, and the United Way, we received a grant from them, we are a partner of theirs now. As well as some different local organizations and clubs such as the Butler Elks, Harmony Moose, and other areas have supported us,” Liebler explained.
Referrals for students 14 years and older are still being taken. For more information about the service, visit here.
