The Chicago Cubs defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2 in 12-innings last night. Vance Worley allowed the game winning run. The Pirates tied the game in the bottom of the eighth inning, ending Cubs starter Jake Arrieta’s chance of picking up his 20th victory of the season. Pirate starter A.J. Burnett pitched 5-1/3rd innings, allowing eight hits and two runs. Burnett walked one and struck out eight. Neil Walker and Starling Marte had two hit nights for the Pirates, but Andrew McCutchen had a rare tough night, striking out four times in five at-bats.
The Pirates and Cubs wrap-up their series today at 12:35pm. Charlie Morton will start for the Bucs.
The Pirates fell to four games behind the first-place St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Central Division. The Cardinals defeated Milwaukee 5-4. The Cubs are three behind the Pirates.
It was Roberto Clemente Day in Pittsburgh Wednesday. The family of Roberto were on hand for various festivities, and Roberto’s widow Vera threw out the first pitch in last night’s game.
