The City of Butler will take another step closer to realizing the Centre City plans at a special meeting Monday.
“The Monday night meeting is primarily for the purpose of awarding the bid to build the parking garage,” Mayor Tom Donaldson told our newsroom. The mayor will be joined by Butler City Council for the 7 p.m. meeting at the City Building downtown.
Thomas Construction made the bid that is expected to be accepted for most of the work on the parking garage. Although they submitted two plans, both are similar in price and scope.
“It’s about getting the project done to the highest quality with the money we have to spend,” Donaldson said.
If bids are awarded, the mayor says he thinks it will be a few more weeks before groundbreaking on the project gets underway.
Last week, the city approved a bond issue with PNC Bank for nearly $7 million that does include the cost of the garage, as well as refinancing parking authority debt and upcoming bridge projects. The term of repayment is 25 years. The city had to get the bond figure finalized before Monday because they bond rating was set to expire.
