Butler Area School District officials say they are continuing to fine-tune the bus routes to ensure that students get home in a timely manner.
Superintendent Dr. Lumley told our newsroom bussing went much better Thursday morning and to-and-from school Wednesday. He attributed the problems on the first day of school on Tuesday as a combination of things, including the fact that it was the first day and things are always slower…and because there have been several route changes due to the consolidation.
“Every year, we have some of these issues,” Lumley said. “And, many of the bus routes that had been in place for years we had to make changes to once we consolidated. We did much better yesterday than the first day.”
Lumley also said the district now has more riders than in the past because most students are no longer walking to school because of the closure of some elementary schools.
The district did issue a call to parents Tuesday evening apologizing for the bus delays. Lumley said going forward, calls will be made to parents while the delays are happening to alert them. He says the district would have issued a call earlier Tuesday but they simply did not know the magnitude of the delays at the time.
“We are optimistic going forward,” he said. “We want to make sure we have the most efficient routes as we can.”
Several parents were upset Tuesday after their children arrived home late from the first day of school. Some told our newsroom their students did not get off buses until after 5 p.m.
Tuesday was the first day of classes since the district’s consolidation, which closed five of the eleven elementary schools and reconfigured the remaining schools.
