The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Cincinnati Reds last night 5-4 to take two of three games in their series. The victory also kept the Pirates 4-1/2 games behind the St. Louis Cardinals, who avoided a sweep by the Chicago Cubs. Jung Ho Kang hit his first major league grand slam in the game. It was his 15th home run of the season. J.A. Happ pitched six innings, allowing two runs on three hits. He did not walk a batter while striking out 10 for his fifth win as a Pirate. Reliever Tony Watson allowed two runs in the eighth inning, but closer Mark Melancon earned his 44th save with a scoreless ninth inning.
The Pirates open an eight game home stand tonight at PNC Park against the Milwaukee Brewers. A.J. Burnett will make his first start since July 30th for the Pirates. First pitch is 7:05pm.
