Former state Senator Jane Orie filed a federal appeal Wednesday seeking a new trial.
Among several arguments, Orie says the Allegheny County Common Pleas judge who heard her case should have appointed a special prosecutor. She alleges Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala Jr. represented a “conflict of interest and a personal animus toward her.”
Orie was convicted in 2012 and served almost two years in prison on charges of conspiracy and for using her state-paid Senate staff to run her re-election campaigns. She had represented much of southern Butler County while she was in the state Legislature.
