The construction of a new VA health care center in Center Township is scheduled to begin this week.
Cambridge Healthcare Solutions will build the proposed $100 million facility on 46 acres on North Duffy Road.
President of Cambridge T. Michael Scott said in a statement the company closed on the purchase of the site on Aug. 27 and are mobilizing work to begin the first week of September. Construction is expected to be completed by December 2017.
Controversy has surrounded this project for the last two years after the VA canceled its lease with Westar Development, who had purchased land on Route 68 in Butler Township to build on. The land was cleared of trees and still sits empty and abandoned today.
After the cancellation, the VA rebid the project and subsequently awarded the contract to Cambridge in December 2014. One of the developer’s that bid on the project the second time around was Oxford Development, who said they would build on the original site in Butler Township. After they were not awarded the work, Oxford Development filed a protest with the federal Government Accountability Office in January. Just this week, a federal judge denied the request of Oxford to revisit the bidding process. Oxford has 60 days to appeal the decision.
