A playwright with local connections has penned three short plays to be performed this weekend in Butler Township.
Butler native Don Orwald says “We’re going to do three original works of mine that are based on works by William Shakespeare, and we’re going to call the evening ‘Shakespeare With Schtick’ because I’m trying to do funny versions of some of his more serious works.”
Orwald is a former Knoch educator currently living in Texas.
Three of his humorous Shakespeare-inspired one act plays will be performed at Preston Park beginning at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, as well as a matinee at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
Although audience members do not need to be experts on the works of Shakespeare, plays that will be referenced include Macbeth and Hamlet, as well as Romeo and Juliet. Proceeds from the performances will benefit a local scholarship fund.
“Part of the proceeds will be going to the Mary Jo Mohn-Covert fund,” he said. “We’ve been giving scholarships for the last five years through Butler County Community College. So a student who’s interested in the arts from Butler County Community College or who’s going to attend will be someone who will I hope benefit from whatever we take in at the gate over the weekend,” Orwald explained.
Tickets are $10 presale through the Eventbrite website or can be purchased for $12 at the park starting an hour before each performance.
Those attending should bring a chair or blanket.
