The Pittsburgh Pirates avoided a St. Louis sweep with a 10-5 victory last night at Busch Stadium. The Pirates scored seven runs in the first inning, knocking Cardinals starter Lance Lynn from the game. Pirate starter Francisco Liriano picked up his eighth win of the season, pitching six innings and allowing three earned runs. (The Pirates went 7-for-13 with runners in scoring position last night, compared to 0-for-10 the night before).
Pedro Alvarez hit his 17th home run of the season, and had three hits to lead the Bucs. Neil Walker also added three hits.
The Pirates are now six games behind the Cardinals in the N.L. Central heading into a three-game series with the New York Mets tonight. First pitch is 7:10pm.
The Chicago Cubs kept pace with the Pirates following a 9-2 victory over Milwaukee. It was the Cubs seventh win in a row and the remain 1-1/2 games behind the Bucs. The Cubs open a series with the Chicago White Sox this afternoon. St. Louis will host Miami tonight.
The Terre Haute Rex won their first ever Prospect League championship Thursday by defeating the West Virginia Miners 3-1 to sweep the title series. Terre Haute had the best overall record in the Prospect League this season, and had swept both halves in the Western Division.
