Some students, and the school president, are sad and outraged after finding a Black History Month flyer on Slippery Rock University’s campus defaced.
The flyer was advertising celebratory school-run programming for Black History Month when it was defamed with words of racism and hate.
“I was heartbroken to learn Wednesday that over the weekend a Black History Month poster in Rhoads Hall was defaced with hateful and race-baiting rhetoric,” SRU President William Behre said in a letter to students, faculty and staff. “It’s impossible to understand what is in the heart of someone who spews such distasteful epitaphs. I won’t guess what is at the root of the fear and ignorance they displayed in their remarks. Still, I am angry this happened and so very sorry for the anguish and pain that this person’s actions have caused to our community as a whole, but especially to our African-American students, faculty and staff who were targeted.”
Behre went on to say the ““behavior has no place at Slippery Rock” and that the school will do all it can to “identify and take appropriate disciplinary sanctions.”
A community discussion is also planned on campus for students and University leaders on Monday, Feb. 18 in the Smith Student Center Theatre at 8 p.m.
“We’re also going to use this troubling event as a catalyst for the community to discuss ways we can make the university a more welcoming and safer place for everyone,” Behre wrote.
The school says the poster was immediately removed from campus when it was discovered last Saturday.
