Country Music Hall of Fame member and producer, songwriter, and arranger, Billy Sherrill, died yesterday (Tuesday, August 4th) morning at his Nashville area home. The Tennesseanreports the 78-year-old’s death followed a short illness.
Sherrill is best known for producing such classic hits as Tammy Wynette‘s “Stand By Your Man,” which he co-wrote with Wynette, Charlie Rich‘s “Behind Closed Doors,” and George Jones‘ “He Stopped Loving Her Today.” He produced dozens of Wynette’s Top 10 and Number One hits, as well as producing Jones for almost 20 years.
Sherrill originally moved to Nashville in 1962 after being hired as a producer-engineer by Sun Records’ Sam Phillips.
Sherrill leaves behind his wife of 54 years, Charlene; his daughter Catherine Lale; and two grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are pending.
