A Butler High School grad will participate in a charity bike ride this weekend to raise money for the ongoing care of a WVU student who was brutally attacked eight years ago.
Ryan Diviney was a junior at West Virginia University when he was involved in a violent assault.
“Ryan was out late one evening with some buddies. They went over to a convenience store near his apartment and he was attacked by some strangers,” said John Malleta, formerly of Butler, who is a friend of the Diviney family and participating int his weekend’s bike ride. “He was left for dead in the parking lot.”
Diviney survived, but remains in a coma and requires full-time care.
“It’s been a very rough situation,” Malleta said. “It’s taken the life of this family and flipped it upside down.”
Every year, a charity cycling event is held in Davinni’s name. This year, the ride is being held in south Florida where riders will bike 235 miles to the Florida Keys.
Diviney’s story has garnered national- and international- attention for the brutality of the attack; innovation in brain injury treatment; and several landmark rulings in the country’s federal courts.
A documentary is currently in production featuring Diviney and others who have suffered Traumatic Brain Injuries.
