It’s tax time…which means it’s also tax scam time.
The Pennsylvania Department of Revenue is urging residents to be aware of several scams that are circulating- including one which involves a phony notice sent in the mail to taxpayers.
Spokesman Jeffrey Johnson says residents should also be aware of phishing schemes in which scammers send fraudulent emails in an attempt to steal personal information.
He suggests residents question everything if they receive an email or phone call discussing taxes. If it’s a phone call, you’re advised to hang up; look up the number to the IRS or other reputable agency; and call the number back yourself.
Anyone victimized by a scam is urged to contact the Department of Revenue’s Fraud Detection and Analysis Unit.
