Audiences are still buying what Tom Cruise is selling. The fifth installment in the Mission Impossible franchise topped the weekend box office with $56 million.
Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation was the second highest opening for the series and Tom’s third highest opening weekend. According to Deadline, 81% of the audience was over the age of 25.
- Paramount exec Megan Colligan said in a statement, “The interesting story as it relates to Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation is that we were supposed to come out at Christmas. The move to July occurred when we were in the middle of shooting. It was a move that Tom Cruise wanted as he felt there was an opportunity in the summer and Brad Grey and Paramount backed him 100%.”
- The weekend’s other new release, Vacation, debuted in second place with $14.85 million and was popular among females.
- Mr. Holmes and Terminator: Genisys dropped out of the top 10.
