The Mars Area School District will not need to relocate an entire grade in order to accommodate a middle school renovation project, but the first day of school will need to be later than anticipated.
Administrators thought they would need to move eighth graders to the high school for the fall semester, but this is no longer the case. A large part of the project will be able to be completed over the summer, while the rest will take place in phases through the fall.
In order to give crews more time in the summer, the new first day of school will likely be Sept. 9 with either fewer scheduled days off through the year or a later ending date. This renovation will address repairs needed at the facility such as a new roof and HVAC equipment.
The total cost of the project is just over $14 million and will utilize money that the district already has in its possession. The board will award bids for the project in early April with a completion date in December.
