The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Minnesota Twins 8-7 last night when shortstop Jung Ho Kang hit a game-winning solo home run in the top of the ninth inning. The blast came after reliever Tony Watson allowed Twins to tie the game in the eighth inning, after Watson entered the game attempting to protect a 7-3 lead. Mark Melancon picked up the win. Kang had two hits along with Pedro Alvarez and Travis Ishikawa. Pirate catcher Francisco Cervelli had three hits and scored twice. Gregory Polanco had a three-run double in the eighth inning. The Bucs and Twins wrap up their two-game series this afternoon at 1:10pm. Francisco Liriano will start for the Pirates against his old club. Ervin Santana will start for the Twins. He has not allowed a run in 15 2/3rds innings since the All-Star break. The Pirates head to Cincinnati for a four-game series beginning tomorrow night.
