The Butler BlueSox defeated the West Virginia Miners 10-7 last night in the Prospect League. The BlueSox posted eight runs in the first inning and held on for the victory. Closer Zach Spangler picked up his 16th save of the season, which ties the all-time Prospect League record. Spangler, who recently completed his freshman year at Kent State, has struck out 22 batters and walked just six batters in 19-2/3rds innings this season for the BlueSox. He has allowed just three runs while saving the 16 games in 17 tries. Larry Wood started the game for Butler, allowing one run over six innings and improved his record to 4-1 this season. The Sox have moved to within a half-game of first place Chillicothe after the Paints lost to Jamestown last night.
Butler begins a four-game home-stand tonight when they host Richmond at 6:35pm. It is Butler Media Group night at Kelly Automotive Park. Pre-game festivities outside the ballpark begin at 5pm, featuring the Noble Hops Band and DragonFly Balloons. During the game, nearly $3,500 worth of summer fun tickets will be given away for various activities and events.
In the Butler County American Legion baseball playoffs Tuesday: Saxonburg defeated Meridian 5-3 and has advanced into the championship. East Butler will host Saxonburg Thursday at 8:30pm at the Speedo Field in East Butler.
