The American League All-Stars defeated the National League 6-3 last night in Cincinnati. Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout hit a home run and was named the game Most Valuable Player. He becomes the first major league player to earn back-to-back MVP awards for the game. David Price of the Detroit Tigers was the winning pitcher. Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw took the loss. Pirate outfielder Andrew McCutchen hit a home run for the National League. Gerrit Cole pitched a scoreless inning, while Mark Melancon allowed a solo home run in his appearance. A.J. Burnett did not make it into the game. With the victory, the American League earns home field advantage for the World Series.
The Bucs open a three-game series in Milwaukee Friday.
Major League Baseball announced the fan-voted “Franchise Four” players for every major league team at last night’s All-Star festivities. The Pirates were Roberto Clemente, Willie Stargell, Bill Mazeroski and Honus Wagner. They also revealed the four greatest “living” four overall in: Sandy Koufax, Willie Mays, Johnny Bench and Hank Aaron.
