The Pittsburgh Pirates completed a dramatic come-from-behind, extra inning victory for the second consecutive day with a 6-5 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals last night at PNC Park. The game was nationally televised for the second straight day as well. Gregory Polanco drove in Jung Ho Kang with the game winner int he bottom of the 10th inning against Cardinals closer Trevor Rosenthal, after the Cardinals had taken a 4-3 lead in the top of the inning. Polanco had three hits in the game, driving in a pair of runs. The Bucs went five-for-11 with runners in scoring position, while Pirates pitching held St. Louis to a 1-for-11 effort. The Pirates improved their record to 53-35 prior to the All-Star break, and are now 2-1/2 games behind the first-place Cardinals. The took three of the four games in the series.
The Pirates return to action this Friday in Milwaukee to start a six-game road trip. 12 of their next 16 games will be on the road.
The Major League Baseball All-Star break begins today, with the annual Home Run Derby at 8pm.
At the Major League Baseball Futures Game in Cincinnati Sunday, Pirates prospect Josh Bell hit the game’s only home run in a 10-1 victory for Team USA over the World Team. Bell is batting .312 with four home runs over the first 80 games this season for the Altoona Curve. He was a second roung pick in 2011.
