The Pittsburgh Pirates completed a series sweep of the San Diego Padres following another come-from-behind victory last night at PNC Park. The 5-2 win completed their major league-leading 10th series sweep of the season. For the second consecutive night, outfielder Gregory Polanco singled in a run that triggered a three-run inning in the eighth. It was also the 22nd comeback victory of the season for the Bucs. Pirate starter Charlie Morton two runs on five hits over six innings, with the Pirates bullpen pitching three shut-out innings to win the game. Jung Ho Kang led the Bucs with two hits, including his 10th double of the season. The Pirates only managed three hits off Padres starter Darren Cashner, but still found a way to beat him.
The Pirates open a big four-game series with the first-place St. Louis Cardinals tonight at PNC Park. The Pirates trail the Cards by 4-1/2 games in the National League Central Division. The Cardinals hit a ninth inning two-run home run last night to avoid another loss to the Chicago Cubs.
Jeff Locke will start for the Pirates tonight. Game time is 7:05pm. Pre-game on WISR 680am is 6:40pm. The Major League baseball All-Star break begins Monday.
Josh Harrison of the Pirates underwent thumb surgery Wednesday and it was announced he will miss at least seven weeks of playing time as a result. Harrison was injured sliding into second base Sunday. It is the first time in his major league career that the Pirate third baseman has been placed on the disabled list.
