The Pittsburgh Pirates were forced to keep first baseman Pedro Alvarez in the line-up late in last night’s game because of injuries to teammates, and the move paid off as Alvarez singled in a walk-off run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning for a 2-1 victory over the San Diego Padres. Jared Hughes earned the win in relief of starting pitcher A.J. Burnett, who allowed one run on five hits over 7-2/3rds innings. Burnett lowered his ERA to 1.99 overall. Andrew McCutchen scored both Pirate runs. McCutchen had the only extra-base hit in the game.
The Bucs host the Padres again tonight at PNC Park. Francisco Liriano will start for the Pirates. First pitch is 7:05pm Pre-game on WISR 680am is 6:40pm.
Pittsburgh Pirate Josh Harrison suffered a torn thumb ligament sliding into a base against the Cleveland Indians Sunday, and will miss six weeks. The Pirates placed Harrison on the 15- day disabled list Monday. The Pirates also are without outfielder Starling Marte who has a muscle strain. Marte has been battling the issue for several weeks, and aggravated it during Sunday’s game. He is trying to avoid the disabled list.
