Three Pennsylvania state senators are planning to introduce a bill this summer that would allow shoppers to buy consumer-grade fireworks without a permit.
Under current law, Pennsylvanians can only buy sparklers and ground-based fireworks, such as smoke bombs and novelty items, at in-state retailers.
To buy other firecrackers, including bottle rockets and Roman candles, people must secure a permit from the municipality in which they plan to light the fireworks.
Aerial fireworks, such as those launched in public displays for the Fourth of July, would not be included.
Lawmakers behind the move point to convenience for shoppers, as well as helping retailers in the state who see shoppers drive to neighboring states to make purchases.
