Multiple sources are reporting the Pittsburgh Penguins are interested in signing two Russian players when the free agent signing period begins July 1st. Winger Sergei Plotnikov and Victor Tikhonov are the targets. Plotnikov recently played on Alexander Ovechkin’s line during the World Championships. He has scored 44 goals over the past three seasons in his Russian league. Tikhonov was a former first-round draft pick of the Phoenix Coyotes and has NHL experience. One report has a deal ready for Plotnikov, who could be a linemate of Evgeni Malkin.
The Penguins home opener has been set for October 13th at the Consol Energy Center. They will host the Montreal Canadiens after opening the season on the road in Dallas October 8th.
