The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Chicago White Sox 3-2 last night to win the eighth straight game. The Bucs took all four games of the series with the White Sox split between two cities. Gerrit Cole won his major league-best 11th game of the season, and Mark Melancon struck out two batters in the ninth inning for his 23rd save of the year. Cole gave up both runs, but allowed just three hits. He walked three and struck out four. The Pirates had 13 hits in the game, including 10 off White Sox starter Jeff Samardzija, but went 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position, and left 10 men on base. Corey Hart led the Bucs with three hits.
The Pirates gained another game on St. Louis after the Cardinals lost to Minnesota 2-1 last night. The Pirates are now 39-27 overall (third-best record in baseball), and will be in Washington for the weekend. A.J. Burnett will start for the Bucs tonight. Game time in D.C. is 7:05pm.
