People making exchanges in the City of Butler now have an additional resource to increase safety during these transactions.
The city has designated a space outside the Butler City Public Safety Building for these exchanges to happen. A ‘Meet-Up Spot’ sign was installed on Wednesday.
“We have cameras here that can view everybody, Butler City Police Chief Ron Brown said. “If the parties involved in the exchange know that law enforcement is watching them, they’re less likely to engage in a crime during the transaction. If something does go wrong, there is surveillance footage.”
The green sign is now plainly located near the entrance to the city police department. The sign did not cost any money as it was donated by a mobile marketplace company called OfferUp.
This designated exchange area was a joint effort of Butler City Police and Butler City Council to increase the safety of Butler residents who buy or sell items online.
Butler City Councilman Mike Walter thinks it’s a great idea.
“The location is perfect. It’s right outside the police station. It’s under a porch so if it’s raining, there is no issue. There are cameras. It’s lit. It’s centrally located. It’s in a tremendous place,” Walter said Wednesday.
Anyone is invited to use this spot and rely on the peace of mind that comes with surveillance during an exchange.
