PennDOT is encouraging you to take steps now to prepare you for when REAL ID-compliant driver’s licenses and ID cards are available.
The new licenses won’t be available until the spring of 2019, but PennDOT suggests you begin gathered several required documents including:
-Proof of Identity (via an original or certified copy of a birth certificate or valid U.S. passport)
-Social Security number (via social security card)
-Proof of all legal name changes
-Two proofs of current address
The reason PennDOT has to switch to a Pennsylvania READ ID driver’s license or ID card is because of new federal regulations. These new types of ID will have to be used to board a commercial flight or visit a secure federal building beginning in October 2020. You will not be able to use your current ID, though you will be able to use a U.S. passport or military ID.
