The motive for this weekend’s shooting at a bar in Chicora remains unclear.
According to court documents, it was about 1:45 a.m. on Sunday when someone called 911 to report a shooting had occurred at the Millerstown Inn in Chicora.
State police arrived soon after and found 27-year-old Heath Schrecengost of Karns City was shot once in the chest. He was flown by medical helicopter to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, where he was initially listed in critical condition in the intensive care unit.
According to police, 56-year-old Gary Ellenberger of Cherry Road in Chicora was the shooter. Officer allege Ellenberger and the victim did not know each other. They say Ellenberger walked up to Schrecengost from across the bar, shot him once in the chest, and then left.
“The victim advised that (Ellenberger) was unknown to him and that he did not have any interaction with him during the course of the night,” according to a police criminal complaint.
Police say they were several other people inside the Millerstown Inn when the shooting happened, including numerous patrons who were standing close to the victim. Officers were able to use surveillance video and witness accounts to identify Ellenberger, who was arrested a short time later at his home.
He is facing several charges including attempted homicide.
