A sign at Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic High School in Butler County has been vandalized.
Rev. Nicholas Vaskov, a spokesman for the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh, confirmed Monday morning that Cardinal Donald Wuerl’s name was spray-painted over. The sign sits at the school’s entrance on Route 228 in Cranberry Township.
“I got an email from the principal explaining that the sign had been vandalized,” Vaskov said Monday. “Beyond that, I don’t know when it occurred.”
As of Monday morning, more than 6,500 people have signed an online petition asking for the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh to remove Wuerl’s name from the school. Vaskov had no comment when asked if the diocese was considering changing the school’s name.
In a grand jury report released last week detailing alleged sexual abuse by Pennsylvania priests, Wuerl was criticized for his handling of allegations while he was bishop of the Pittsburgh diocese. He is now archbishop of Washington.
