Pope Francis has issued a letter to Catholics around the world in response to the Pennsylvania priest sex abuse scandal revealed last week in a startling grand jury report.
The Pope condemned the “crime” of priestly sexual abuse and cover-up and demanded accountability. He begged forgiveness for the pain suffered by victims and said Catholics must be involved in any effort to root out abuse and cover-up.
He wrote: “We showed no care for the little ones; we abandoned them.”
In the Pittsburgh Roman Catholic Diocese, Bishop David Zubik has come under fire and there have been calls for him to resign. Priests at every parish in the diocese read a letter from the bishop during Mass this weekend.
In the letter, Bishop Zubik emphasized how they’ve made drastic improvements over the past 30 years. He also said there is no priest or deacon in active ministry with a credible allegation against him.
