The Steelers, traded for Washington Redskins cornerback Dashaun Phillips on Wednesday night in exchange for center Lucas Crowley.
Phillips started two games and played in five for the Redskins in 2016. Both of his starts came as the nickel corner. He had seven tackles and a fumble recovery.
In two NFL seasons, he has played in 11 games with 14 tackles.
Crowley was added to the Steelers’ roster during training camp.
Veteran cornerback Coty Sensabaugh confirmed he got reps with the first-team defense in practice Wednesday, the first of training camp at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex on the South Side.
Artie Burns has one cornerback spot, other starters Ross Cockrell and William Gay could be in trouble by Steelers defensive coaches. Cockrell was beaten for a 44-yard reception Saturday against the Atlanta Falcons.
The Steelers added former West Virginia cornerback Antonio Crawford and wide receiver Justin Thomas, a former quarterback at Georgia Tech, to the roster Wednesday. Both are undrafted free agents.
Running back Brandon Brown-Dukes was waived, and cornerback Greg Ducre was waived/injured.
Ben Roethlisberger will make his preseason debut when he starts Saturday against the Indianapolis Colts.
Roethlisberger expects to play “one or two” series against the Colts, much like he did last year in the team’s third preseason game.
Running back Le’Veon Bell tweeted 9/1/17 on his Twitter page yesterday which leads to speculation that will be when he returns to the Steelers.
