A Pennsylvania lawmaker is pushing a piece of legislation that would protect first responders who break windows to rescue animals locked in hot cars.
Bucks County Republican Frank Farry says the bill would provide civil immunity for breaking a car window if a first responder or humane officer needs to free an animal.
“The bill has support from the FOP, the Humane Society and AAA,” Farry said.
It passed the House Judiciary Committee but not without some debate.
Republican Jeff Pyle, who represents a portion of Butler County, was more concerned for the windows, especially if he thinks the first responders are wrong about an animal’s condition.
“If my dog is in the car someone can throw a brick through my window and with your civil immunity provision would be protected…everyone walks away and says ‘sorry- get your window fixed’…I have a problem with that,” Pyle said.
Rep. Farry assured Rep. Pyle the act would have to be justified.
