People are getting ready to plant their gardens and gearing up to get their tomatoes started. Here’s an idea to help be successful with them. Plant the tomatoes sideways.
It’s one of many tips ‘The Organic Gardener,’ Doug Oster, shared with our radio station. He says he builds up the dirt and then puts the roots in sideways. That that way they are closer to heat and water than if they were planted straight into the ground. Oster says tomato plants love heat and water.
There is one thing after that which is important to do. Oster says you’ll want to mark where you plant the roots so you don’t drive a stake through them and that the plants will eventually turn upwards after they start growing.
Dog Oster says he plants a variety of tomatoes each year and starts them at different times of the season all the way up to July 4th.
