The Butler Area School Board is moving forward with plans that could see the addition of a privately-owned athletic training dome to district property.
Butler grad and former major league pitcher Matt Clement and his business partner attended Monday night’s athletic committee meeting to inform the board that only one site meets all the requirements for the instillation of the facility. That location is on the property at the Senior High that is currently the site of two girls’ softball fields.
According to the district’s Athletic Director Bill Mylan, the district’s current baseball field would need turf installed to make up for losing those two fields with the instillation of the dome. Mylan also said the district’s current athletic facilities put the district at a competitive disadvantage with other local districts of similar size.
A small committee will be formed of those closely involved in the project to iron out the district’s contribution to the project in the way of maintenance services and utilities. If a final plan is agreed to, construction of the dome could take an estimated six months.
