Slippery Rock University mid-distance runner Ryan Thompson, a graduate of Slippery Rock high school, was named Wednesday as the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Male Indoor Track Athlete of the Year after voting by the league’s head coaches.
Thompson, a senior from Slippery Rock, was already named the Atlantic Region Male Track Athlete of the Year for the indoor season by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association and the Overall Most Valuable Athlete at the PSAC Championships.
Thompson earned the top league honor after posting the fastest times in the region in both the mile (4:05.72) and the 3,000-meter run (8:27) and anchoring the second fastest distance medley relay (10:14) in the region this winter.
His mile time shattered the SRU program record and broke the all-time PSAC record in the process. He went on to earn All-America honors with a 12th place finish in the mile at the NCAA Division II National Championships.
Thompson has carried his form into the outdoor season and currently owns the fastest 1,500-meter time in the nation after breaking the SRU record with a mark of 3:48.20 last week at the Raleigh Relays.
