Butler County officials are looking to train storm spotters.
“We want anyone who is interested in weather,” Amy Marree, county emergency management planner, said Tuesday in an interview. “You don’t have to have a certain degree or anything like that. We want people who are passionate about the weather and who can provide a vital link between us and the National Weather Service in Butler County.”
The volunteer would be trained through SKYWARN, which is a National Weather Service program that consists of trained weather spotters who report significant and severe weather.
The training is free and the latest session will be on Wednesday, March 22 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Butler County Department of Emergency Services on 120 McCune Drive.
Seating is limited to 35 participants. You must register to attend. You can do that by clicking here and then clicking on the Butler County Pre-Register link.
Marree says additional training will be provided this fall and then again next spring if you’re unable to get into the session in March.
“The National Weather Service can’t be everywhere at all times,” she says. “They can only watch radar on the computers so having eyes to justify what they’re seeing makes it all the better.”
