The Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Washington Capitals 8-7 in overtime last night. Conor Sheary scored the game-winner for the Penguins, who overcame a 3-0 deficit by scoring six goals in the second period. Five of the goals were unanswered after the early Washinton lead. Evgeni Malkin scored a hat trick for the Pens, while Sidney Crosby had four points, including a goal. It was Malkin’s 11th career hat trick. He scored all three of his goals in the second period. Defenseman Justin Schultz, who was an All-Star snub, also had four points. The loss snapped a three-game Penguins losing streak, and a Capitals nine-game winning streak.
The Pens visit Montreal tomorrow night.
Penguins defenseman Kris Letang was placed on injured reserve and will be week-to-week with a lower body injury. The Pens recalled defenseman Chad Ruhwedel from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. The Pens also called up forward Jake Guentzel, who has 21 goals in 33 games in the minors. He played on the Malkin-Patric Hornqvist line last night and had an assist.
