If you do choose to use an alternative heat source to take the chill out of a cooler room, space heaters can be a great option but they can also be dangerous.
Consumer Reports tested space heaters to find the best and safest options.
Their tests found a $70 Comfort Zone heater was a little larger than the typical smaller, personal-sized heater but was still very portable.
It’s a good idea to look for a space heater with a tip over switch that turns the heater off if it’s knocked over, and an overheat sensor that shuts off the heater if it gets too hot. A $100 Lifesmart heater is a good option if you want something larger.
Consumer Reports says to keep in mind that larger space heaters don’t necessarily offer more heat than smaller ones. However, they’re meant to stay in one place so they’re a good option as a permanent heater in a larger room.
