Volunteers are needed to help people prepare their tax returns.
The VITA program- Volunteer Income Tax Assistance- is run through the Center for Community Resources.
“There’s a lot of prep that goes into this,” Jean Bowen with CCR said. “They have to come to a training session, pass a test through the Internal Revenue Service and then sit with a mentor for a day.”
A two-day training class will be offered in December and January at Butler County Community College and Slippery Rock University. After passing the training program, volunteers will be assigned to shifts at one of four locations around the Butler County area, including in Butler City, Cranberry, Slippery Rock and Kittanning.
“Normally we request volunteers work at least a three-hour shift per week for 12 weeks,” Bowen said. “It starts the last week in January and goes through the second week in April.”
College students may be able to get credits for the work.
Volunteers must be over 18 and have basic math and computer skills. Volunteers will also be screened for child abuse and criminal history clearances paid for by the state. For more information, call 724-431-3732.
VITA is funded by a grant from the IRS.
