Butler County has been added to a PA Department of Agriculture program to dispose of unwanted pesticides.
CHEMSWEEP is offered in different counties every year and 2017’s list of 15 includes Butler County.
Licensed businesses who deal with pesticides will be mailed a form about products that have been discontinued or become unusable. These products cannot be disposed of in a landfill and become a safety concern the longer they are stored. An independent contractor hired by the state will collect and package products to be disposed. The program covers the cost of the first ton per participant with participants billed for amounts more than 2,000 pounds.
The program is funded by annual registration fees paid by pesticide manufacturers. For more information about this program, visit chemsweep.pa.gov.
