State Police in Mercer County are warning local residents of several scams circulating around the area.
According to police, thieves have lately been using the “relative in need” scam to target especially the elderly.
In this scam victims are often contacted by phone and told that a relative is in desperate need of money due to imprisonment, a vehicle crash, or being stranded in another country. Some thieves even impersonate the relative but all ask for the victim to provide access to funds or credit card information.
Other scams include lottery scams, home repair scams, home invasion thefts, and sweetheart swindles where a young woman befriends an elderly man. Police recommend everyone avoid giving financial information to anyone they do not know over the phone. Also, anyone who has been a victim of a scam should contact police immediately.
