Even though experts suggested Tuesday would likely be the busiest travel day of the Thanksgiving holiday, there will still be thousands of extra drivers on the roads today.
Safety is a concern, with an estimated 430 traffic deaths occurring each Thanksgiving weekend across the country.
“The more prepared you are, the better able you are to deal with any contingencies,” PennDOT District 10’s Deborah Casadei told our newsroom.
Being prepared means checking roadway conditions and traffic. You can use PennDOT’s 511PA.com website or the Pennsylvania Turnpike’s Trip Talk app for that. It also means preparing your vehicle.
“Make sure your tires are good…your wipers are good…your fluid levels are where they need to be,” she said.
If you come across an aggressive driver, you’re urged to remain calm.
“If you come into a situation where you have someone weaving in- and -out of traffic and driving irresponsibly, don’t make eye contact,” she said. “Just drive. Don’t even interact with them. Keep yourself as safe as you can.”
State Police will be patrolling the turnpike, making sure motorists are obeying speed limits and staying off their phones.
