Slippery Rock University defensive end Marcus Martin, of West Mifflin, has been named one of eight national finalists for the Gene Upshaw Division II Lineman of the Year Award. Martin, a junior, had nine sacks this season, and broke the SRU and PSAC sack records. This is the fourth time since 2010 and third consecutive year that a Rock player has been named a finalist. Current Minnesota Vikings offensive lineman Brandon Fusco won the award in 2010.
IUP advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs with a 62-13 rout of Fairmont State.
The Crimson Hawks will travel to California this Saturday. Cal had a first-round “bye”. The Vulcans won the regular season PSAC meeting over IUP 31-28.
The Slippery Rock University women’s basketball team rebounded from its first loss of the season with an impressive 72-65 victory at Kutztown University Sunday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference competition.
The win improves The Rock’s record to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the PSAC. Slippery Rock has now started the season 3-1 in each of the last two seasons. The last time Slippery Rock started 3-1 in consecutive years was 2004-05 / 2005-06. Kutztown drops to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in league games with the loss. Karns City graduate and Rock freshman LeeAnn Gibson had the best game of her young career with nine points and six rebounds.
The 14th ranked Kutztown University men’s basketball team closed the first half on a 40-16 run to break the game open on the way to handing Slippery Rock an 88-69 loss Sunday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action. The loss drops Slippery Rock to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in PSAC games, while Kutztown remains unbeaten and improves to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in league games.
